Thoracic Kyphosis Deformity
Thoracic Kyphosis Deformity
The upper spine (thoracic) has a normal roundness or forward curvature as seen from the side. The normal thoracic curvature ranges from 25-45 degrees. However, in certain genetic diseases (Scheuermann’s kyphosis), thoracic degenerative disc disease, and osteoporosis can cause the upper back to have excessive roundness or hyper kyphosis.
Symptoms can range from mild roundness to severe pronounced deformity with a hunched deformity. The inability to stand upright, back pain and fatigue are common symptoms.
Treatment can include physical therapy with an extension stretching and muscle strengthening program. Upper back bracing can sometimes halt progression and eliminate pain. In severe cases of kyphosis, restoration of spinal alignment, reduction of pain and return of trunk height can be achieved with spinal thoracic fusion.
